Cloud adoption is a priority for only 27% of broadcasters
According to a survey commissioned by the subsidiary of Sony, NevionAmong broadcasters around the world, less than a third (27%) consider cloud adoption a priority, behind 5G technology (34%), for example.
Interestingly, this contradicts nearly 9 in 10 broadcasters (89%) who intend to adopt cloud technologies in the next year.
The survey, which involved 250 broadcast technology decision-makers in a dozen regions, however, revealed growing interest in using the cloud for specific applications, with almost two-thirds (63%) stating that they had already started applying it to post-production/file-based production.
However, concerns remain over the suitability of using the cloud for live production, with just under half (45%) having reservations about performance issues such as latency, and a further 40% citing security concerns. For some organizations, the need for a broader mindset shift is perceived as a challenge, with 39% saying that a broadly conservative mindset toward cloud within their organization is the biggest barrier to cloud adoption.
Despite this, the benefits of the cloud continue to be recognised, and the future of cloud for live product looks promising, with further research statistics finding that over two-thirds (71%) of respondents believe that fully public cloud environments for live production will be possible in the future.
“While some organizations are considering an all-cloud approach, others are still choosing to stick with more traditional on-premise production, or are looking to move to a hybrid cloud and on-shore solution.” Regardless of the approach, Sony and Nevion are working together to ensure that broadcasters have the right mix for their business, creative and operational needs,” concludes Suard.
