Christie and Dolby team up to develop first Dolby Vision laser projection system
Cinemas around the world will begin receiving the new Dolby Vision laser projection system starting in May, a joint development of Christie y Dolby Laboratories.
The projection system Dolby Vision was born with the objective of offering the cinematic experience that filmmakers, viewers and exhibitors have been waiting for since it was presented Dolby Cinema ten years ago. With more than double the brightness Compared to typical cinema projections and a contrast ratio that exceeds a million to one, viewers will be able to enjoy “brighter whites, darker blacks and sharper details.” To offer highly saturated and realistic colors, this new color system 4K projection will employ RGB laser lighting pure, which will allow reaching the Dolby Wide Color Gamut 1.0, which almost doubles the color spectrum of Rec. 709 and covers the 122% from space DCI-P3.
With significantly improved reliability and efficiency, the Dolby Vision laser projection system offers superior long-term performance while maintaining ease of operation. Likewise, thanks to its lighter design and more compact chassis, it will be more easily integrated into a variety of premium rooms, thus expanding the reach of Dolby Vision to more audiences. This includes Dolby Cinema, Dolby's most advanced cinema experience, as well as the recently announced Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos solution, designed for exhibitors' own premium theaters.
Pascal Sijen, director senior business and strategic planning of the film section of Dolby Laboratories, notes that “Christie has played a fundamental role in Dolby's ongoing mission to bring Dolby Vision experiences to more and more movie theaters.” Therefore, the company is “looking forward to offering exhibitors this new projection solution, which provides the same award-winning and industry-leading image performance, while making it significantly more efficient and easier for exhibitors to adopt.”
On the other hand, Don Shaw, CEO of Christie's Americas Film Division, celebrates the collaboration with Dolby: "We are delighted to continue our relationship with Dolby. From the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Engineering Award for the Christie E3LH Dolby Vision Cinema projection system, to delivering cinematic excellence on screens around the world, this renewed collaboration builds on more than 10 years of joint success."
